Last night at the Special Membership held in Wall Township, our Local had its most well attended meeting to date.  I want to thank those who attended last night’s meeting and I hope that the next meetings are as well attended.

For those of you who weren’t able to attend, here is a short summary key action taken at the meeting.

·         The members in attendance overwhelmingly ratified the appointments that I made to the executive board. Those appointments include; Kevin Tauro as Executive Vice President and Bob Hoyer as the Vice President of County Government. These two members of our board will add to the diversity of experience that our local has so that we may better represent you and keep this local moving forward in the right direction.

·         I addressed the membership and gave a brief update as to the state of our Union and what steps we are taking to move our local forward. The full text of the speech can be read here: CWA Local 1038 State of the Union

·         The membership proposed an important referendum from the floor.  Now more than ever it is important for your fellow brothers and sisters to join our e-mail list service, because the referendum states that; “All Meeting Minutes for the Executive Board Meetings as well as the Membership Meetings will now be e-mailed to the membership using our system” This type of proposal is why it is so important for members to attend each and every membership meeting they can.  The structure of the membership meetings is in such a way so that each member who wants to speak on an issue may.

In addition to e-mailing the membership and executive board meeting minutes I have announced that we are exploring the ability for our local to have a member’s only section, so we can have another way to share not only our minutes but important updates from your Union.

·         The membership also voted to accept my recommendations for the Budget and Elections committees. On the topic of the committees I want to remind all members that as a member you have the right to request to serve on the committees of your choosing.  Our committees are stipulated in our Local Bylaws which can be found here:   CWA Local 1038 Bylaws

If you would like to serve on a committee please make your request in writing to info@cwa1038.org include the following information; Your Name, Your Department, Your Complete Contact information, and first, second and third choice of the committee you wish to serve on.

·         Tentative Dates and locations were set for the next four general membership meetings. Once facilities are secured for those dates official notice will be mailed out via our e-mail system and by mail.  Attending meetings are important so please be sure the local has your most current e-mail and home address so you receive these important notices.

The Tentative date and locations are as follows:

·         February 29th 2012 to be held in the Northfield/Vineland are

·         April 11th 2012 to be held in the Cherry Hill area

·         June 13th 2012 to be held in Trenton NJ

·         September 12th 2012 to be held in Monmouth County

Again, I want to thank the membership for your continued support as we keep moving forward and keep our union moving in the right direction.

In Solidarity,

Rachel Merrill, President of CWA Local 1038
